Cooperative Systems for Sustainable Mobility and Energy Efficiency

COSMO is a 32 month pilot project whose aim is to demonstrate in realistic conditions the benefits of integrating advanced cooperative traffic management services and to quantify their impact in improving energy efficiency and reducing the carbon footprint.

Experimentation will be carried out in the following application areas:

         Environmentally sensitive traffic control strategies

Eco-driving for private vehicle and for public transport

         Multimodal real-time information systems

Advanced energy efficient technologies integrated in roadside equipment

         Dynamic City Access Management strategy

         Advanced Real-Time Congestion Management System

COSMO will set up three Pilot Sites in which a range of cooperative applications will be installed and tested: Salerno (Italy), Vienna (Austria) and Gothenburg (Sweden). All sites will implement leading-edge cooperative systems technologies developed in the recent EC-funded research projects COOPERS, CVIS and SAFESPOT.

The Italian and Swedish Pilot sites consist of urban scenarios, involving public transport, while the Austrian Pilot is testing an inter-urban use case on a motorway.

Objectives:

COSMO is adopting a system-wide approach to the assessment of energy efficiency, measuring the effect of a range of innovative traffic management systems not only on fuel consumption and traffic emissions, but also considering the impact of the energy used by the equipment itself, the product lifecycle and energy harvesting.

The principal result will be a set of quantified specifications for their practical deployment, covering technical, legal and organisational issues, as well as indications on the procurement, installation, operation and maintenance.

COSMO contributes to the EcoMobility sector objectives "Eco-smart driving" and Eco-traffic management".

Duration and funding:

November 2010 – June 2013.

Co-funded by the European Commission under the Competitiveness & Innovation Programme - ICT Policy Support Programme (CIP - ICT-PSP)
