Open (OSGi-based) in-vehicle telematics platforms for the mass market
The conflict between the lifecycles of vehicles and their telematics components is sometimes referred to as the "lifecycle disaster". OSGi (Open Services Gateway initiative) has the potential to solve this problem as it offers a framework for managing the lifecycle of network-delivered applications. The 3GT project will extend OSGi to support automotive telematics by establishing common interfaces for OSGi-based telematics service delivery.
The project draws on the expertise of many leading telematics companies, who are either present within the consortium or who have joined the open project Forum that was established at the start of the project. Members of the project's forum meet at the key stages in the project and are given access to all main documents.
Project progress can be traced via the following milestones:
- October 2002 - a comprehensive set of user needs and service requirements (validated by the project Forum)
- December 2002 - draft framework architecture and draft interface specifications (validated by the project Forum)
- August 2003 - successful trials
- October 2003 - validation results
- November 2003 - standardisation proposals (validated by the project Forum), and,
- October 2003 - wide project awareness leading to live demonstrations at the November 2003 Madrid World Congress.
