Dynamic updating of on-board digital maps
Up-to-date map data are a must for current and future in-vehicle ITS applications, in particular — Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) — and navigation applications. Today, digital maps are stored on CD-ROMs or DVDs, with periodic updates available only on replacement disks. ActMAP is developing standardised mechanisms to update existing map database content and enable dynamic attachment of information to the digital in-vehicle map. These mechanisms represent an important milestone for the umbiquitous availability of future location-based information and the quality of the map databases for future in-vehicle applications. ActMAP has also used test-sites to validate the mechanism(s), including advanced navigation applications and ADAS applications (curve speed control and Predictive Cruise Control (PCC) with speed adaptation). After validation, the proposed mechanisms and exchange format were submitted to the ISO TC204/WG3 standardisation body. The ActMAP Forum, was also created to unite anyone willing to implement or use dynamic map actualisation in his applications/services.
Objectives Develop and propose standardised mechanisms to deliver incremental map updates for in-vehicle navigation and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) applications. In more detail:
- Investigate current and future in-vehicle applications in relation to actualisation of map data
- Define strategies for actualising map components in a vehicle
- Define and develop actualisation mechanisms and specifications corresponding to these strategies
- Implement the proposed actualisation mechanisms in different applications
- Test these applications including route guidance and ADAS applications
- Validate these test results to assess the technical feasibility of the developed actualisation method
