SAGA
Setting standards for Galileo
The EU-supported project SAGA is determining requirements for standards to support operations, applications and receivers for the Galileo satellite navigation system, Europe's answer to GPS. ERTICO is responsible for the road transport sector, focusing on the need for standards for Galileo receivers and their integration with other in-vehicle systems, as well as possible standards for positioning-based services such as emergency call, road charging, tracking and traffic information.
Objectives
- Review potential ITS applications relevant to Galileo standards
- Identify standardisation requirements for key ITS applications
- Introduce Galileo features and benefits to ITS standardisation committees
- Serve as an important catalyst for introducing ITS requirements into the Galileo definition and development process, which will lead to full operation of the satellite constellation by 2008
- Stimulate the preparation and take-up of Galileo satellite navigation by the ITS product and service markets
