In-vehicle speed limit information and warning system

Intelligent speed management has been identified as one of the priority areas for road safety improvement. In-vehicle speed alert systems can contribute to increased driver awareness of road speed limits. The SpeedAlert initiative has brought all key actors across Europe together with a common objective to support and coordinate the implementation of in-vehicle speed alert systems in Europe.

Objectives
Based on consensus with public and private sectors, SpeedAlerts overall objectives are to:
• Harmonise the in-vehicle speed alert concept definition
• Investigate the first priority issues to be addressed at the European level, such as the collection, maintenance and certification of speed limit information

More precisely, this is translated in the following specific objectives:
• Establish a common classification of speed limits in Europe relevant to in-vehicle speed alert applications
• Identify the system and service requirements for in-vehicle speed alert applications
• Define functional architecture and analyse the corresponding technical building blocks
• Harmonise the definition of speed alert concepts and develop an associated deployment roadmap
• Identify requirements for standardisation
• Develop cooperation and liaison with other activities on European/national level

Consultation Group
The success of SpeedAlert relies on the ability of the consortium to identify the requirements and harmonised architecture relevant to Member States and other key stakeholders at a European level. To ensure this, a Consultation Group has been established counting participants from all key stakeholders in the field, including EC, public authorities, road operators, vehicle manufacturers, suppliers, service providers, research institutes and insurance companies.
