Making the most of satellite navigation services
The European satellite navigation system Galileo is expected to revolutionise many sectors of the economy, starting with transport. Providing a global positioning service under civilian control, it will deliver real-time positioning accuracy down to the metre range.
A related service, the European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS), will further contribute to perfecting positioning accuracy. By improving the American Global Positioning Service (GPS) and the Russian Global Orbiting Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS), EGNOS will allow users in Europe and beyond to determine their position to within 5 metres – compared to the current 20 metres.
Using such high-quality positioning data, new and improved applications will be made available in areas in which safety is crucial, such as navigating trains, guiding cars and landing aircraft.
The AGILE (Application of Galileo in the Location-Based Services Environment) project aims to foster the take-up of global navigation satellite services in the mobility sector, putting special emphasis on the use of EGNOS and Galileo. Location-based personal mobility services are widely expected to be the largest Galileo mass market, both in terms of number of users and revenue opportunities. AGILE’s ultimate objective is to define a roadmap that will bring profitable EGNOS and Galileo-based applications to reality.
Objectives
- Segment the Location-Based Services market into application groups, analyse how profitable services can be delivered within each group and evaluate the added value of Galileo and EGNOS.
- Link the business perspectives of each application group with Galileo.
- Establish an appropriate framework for service take-up, contributing to standardisation efforts, regulation and legislation.
- Promote the potential of Location-Based Services for personal mobility through open fora, demonstrations, awareness raising and training activities.
Duration and Funding
October 2005 - September 2007, funding through the Galileo Joint Undertaking (GJU), set up by the European Commission and European Space Agency to manage the development phase of the Galileo Programme.
