Lending support to the eSafety Forum

The number of deaths and injuries on Europe’s roads remains unacceptably high. The European Commission, ERTICO and ACEA (European Automobile Manufacturers Association) therefore launched the eSafety initiative in 2002. By encouraging the development and deployment of Intelligent Vehicle Safety Systems, the eSafety initiative aims to contribute to the European Commission’s goal of halving the number of road deaths by 2010.

Together, the eSafety stakeholders are making substantial investments in research and development in order to bring such high-tech safety systems to Europe’s motorists, making the roads safer for everyone. The eSafety Forum, a joint platform involving over 150 active members representing all road safety stakeholders, was created in 2003 to oversee these efforts. A number of working groups have also been established that address key eSafety issues and technologies.

eSafety Support assists the eSafety initiative in its goal of reducing the number of fatal road accidents in Europe. Hosted by ERTICO, the project’s main tasks are to stimulate and monitor the activities, progress and results generated by the eSafety initiative. It offers assistance to the eSafety Forum and its Working Groups, keeps all stakeholders up-to-date on eSafety progress and findings and promotes the benefits of Intelligent Vehicle Safety Systems to the general public.

Objectives

• Aid and promote the dialogue between all eSafety stakeholders.
• Support the implementation of a pan-European emergency call system (eCall).
• Launch studies on topics identified by the eSafety Forum.
• Support the development of the Implementation Road Map for all Intelligent Vehicle Safety Systems.
• Monitor and promote the implementation of the eSafety Working Groups’ recommendations.
• Support the EC’s i2010 Intelligent Car Initiative that aims to develop and deploy vehicles that are smart, safe and clean.
