Advancing map-enhanced driver assistance systems

To enable and/or enhance the functionalities of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), vehicle manufacturers want to access and use the information provided by navigation systems such as map data, vehicle position and speed. Today, however, navigation map databases are only accessible to navigation applications and stored in the proprietary format of the navigation system. In order for ADAS applications to access this data, an appropriate information exchange interface must be defined. This is the overall aim of the ADASIS Forum.

However, technology is not the only obstacle to the deployment of map-enhanced ADAS applications. To ensure that the technology developed by the ADASIS Forum actually makes it off the drawing board and test tracks and onto the roads, the Forum is devoting time and effort to encourage the automotive industry to exploit the results and accelerate market introduction.

Objectives

• Define a standardised data model to represent map data ahead of the vehicle (the so-called ADAS horizon).
• Determine data requirements, namely a list of ADAS requirements necessary for the creation or generation of the ADAS horizon.
• Define the functional architecture necessary to build the ADAS horizon, including a representation of its evolution over time.
• Define a standardised interface to enable ADAS applications to access this ADAS horizon.
• Determine the software interface specifications necessary to build/access the ADAS horizon, including the protocols necessary to handle the required data stream.
• Liaise with national/international activities relevant to digital maps and ADAS applications.
• Identify the standardisation body to which ADASIS specifications will be submitted and establish a proactive link with the corresponding expert group.
• Explore commercial vehicles’ needs in terms of applications and road data attributes.
