RESPONSE 3

Bringing ADAS to market quickly and safely

A number of obstacles are standing in the way to the speedy market introduction of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). One such barrier is the need to prove the reasonable safety of these systems, in order to avoid possible financial, liability, and brand image risks.

RESPONSE 3, a subproject of the Integrated Project PReVENT intends to provide the vehicle industry with the tools to overcome and manage these risks. The project is developing a European Code of Practice for the development and testing of ADAS, presenting an integrated perspective on the relevant human, system and legal aspects. Such a Code of Practice forms the basis for an international agreement on ADAS safety issues and is expected to substantially speed up the market introduction of ADAS applications.

The Code of Practice will contain descriptions of procedures and processes for analysis of user requirements, definition of systems according to these requirements and validation procedures showing that these safety-related customer requirements are fulfilled. The procedures also take into account legal questions regarding product liability, driver responsibility, and manufacturer’s liability. As such, the Code of Practice will be a key instrument to help engineers develop safe products, industry to protect itself against litigation, and authorities to understand and follow the development and testing processes.

Objectives

  • Provide tools and common understanding for the vehicle industry to overcome and manage the risks related to a successful market introduction of preventive and active safety systems.
  • Develop a widely acceptable Code of Practice for "safe" ADAS development and testing to help mitigate liability risks when introducing new preventive safety applications on the market.
  • Obtain agreement on these development guidelines between all stakeholders, ensuring that they become an integrated part of companies’ system design and validation processes.
