ERTICO - ITS Europe: How important are global harmonised standards for ITS Korea?

Dr Young-Jun Moon: The requirements for deployment of ITS are slightly different for the American, European, and Asia-Pacific regions and so to some degree, different system technologies have been developed with a consequential lack of interoperability.  Thus, a high degree of global harmonisation of ITS standards under the theme of “Ubiquitous Society with ITS” is necessary in order to avoid overlapping and even conflicting standards and to provide world-wide interoperability of ITS systems. For instance, one of the working groups in ISO/TC204, WG17, deals with nomadic devices in ITS services. The aim is to facilitate the development, promotion and standardisation of nomadic devices to support ITS service provision and multimedia use in motor vehicle communication networks. This global standard fosters the introduction of multimedia and telematics nomadic devices for ubiquitous ITS services in the automotive world. It also includes the provision of updated information from the vehicle via nomadic devices to external service providers, and the update of vehicle data systems, such as map updates etc., within the vehicle via nomadic devices.

ERTICO - ITS Europe:The theme of the upcoming ITS World Congress in Busan is “Ubiquitous Society with ITS”. Could you elaborate on this concept, and explain the milestones for it?

Dr Young-Jun Moon:The theme “Ubiquitous Society with ITS” aims towards what we may call ITS 2.0 - the next generation of ITS, in a similar way that Web 2.0 is to the internet. To achieve this paradigm shift, any transport related object including any¬thing from people to things should have proper transport intelligence anywhere, at anytime, and for any device. Three strategies - ubiquity, transparency, and trustability - will be highlighted in this Congress through exploring how to address social challenges in the global crisis on environment and how to stimulate ITS stakeholders to make this a realisation. For example with transparency, the objects in the transporta¬tion system can be provided with ubiquitous transportation services, without any conscious¬ness or recognition, based on the individual location & context awareness. The transport subjects, including drivers, passengers, pedestrians, and consignors, can get real-time traffic information from the ubiquitous transportation environment that is calm, pervasive, and invisible.

ERTICO - ITS Europe: What will be the main goals for the upcoming ITS World Congress in Busan?

Dr Young-Jun Moon: As mentioned in the Call for Paper the main goal for the upcoming ITS World Congress is “Safe, Convenient, and Green Mobility” under the theme of Ubiquitous Society with ITS.  Transport is a major contributor of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions, accounting for approximately 28 percent of total global emissions from human activity. ITS is emerging to help meet the safety, efficiency, and climate challenges of transport. Typically, the convergence between vehicle and information technology including vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle–to-infrastructure communication systems is being realised as it evolves worldwide. Our goal is designed to highlight innovative solutions to the convergence of existing information technology to promote a sustainable transport network which links human beings, vehicles, fuel, and overall transportation systems for the next generation.

About Dr Moon Dr Moon is Research Fellow and Director at the Department Advanced Transportation Research at the Korea Transport Institute (KOTI). Amongst his many ITS research interests, Dr Moon highlights Cooperative Vehicle and Highway-Infrastructure System, Telematics and Transportation Information System, Traffic Engineering for Operation and Management, Traffic Safety and Control, Transportation Network Design Modeling, Transportation Facility Design, and Traffic Flow Theory. Dr Moon is also Convener of working group 17 - Nomadic and Portable Devices for ITS Services in ISO/TC204 from 2008. Dr Moon is also IPC Chair of the ITS World Congress Organising Committee – Busan, Korea being the site of the 17th ITS World Congress.
