With the theme “ITS in Daily Life”, the 16th ITS World Congress will present and demonstrate how new ITS solutions can improve everyone’s mobility, every day. The theme brings focus on the importance of making everyday use of innovative vehicle technologies, traffic management and mobility services covering all the transport modes a reality for Europe.
The Congress will focus on the benefits of ITS for transport and traffic managers, drivers, and travellers. It will explore how ITS addresses societal and environmental challenges, how to accelerate ITS deployment and investment in ITS infrastructure. Stakeholders from around the globe will be able to exchange knowledge and generate further development, as well as exhibit their innovative ITS solutions.

22 September, from 10 am onwards:
- Photo opportunity: Opening of Exhibition and VIP visit
- Extensive exhibition featuring ITS products, services and organisations, as well as results of leading European funded research projects.
- Interview opportunities with European policy-makers, worldwide senior industry executives, research and project coordinators.
- eSafety Awards ceremony: rewarding the most outstanding, ambitious and innovative achievements that have made a difference in making intelligent vehicle safety systems a reality in Europe, awarded by Vivian Reding, European Commissioner for Information Society and Media.
- CVIS Application Innovation Contest 2009: CVIS project launched an application submission contest inviting European service developers to develop applications that run on the CVIS reference platform. The three most innovative applications will present their solution at the ITS World Congress and will receive the prize awards.
Other activities during the Congress:
Congress: The Congress includes 245 conference sessions relating to ITS for all modes of transport (road, rail, aviation and maritime)
Demonstrations: Highlights include the “Cooperative Systems Showcase”, where visitors will be able to experience the future of cooperative mobility based on technologies enabling vehicles and road infrastructure to communicate. These technologies have been developed in European Union-funded R&D projects including CVIS (“Cooperative Vehicle-Infrastructure Systems”), that is coordinated by ERTICO – ITS Europe.
The indoor “Demo Theatre” is where ITS will come to life in a varied programme of theatrical demonstrations. A Cooperative Systems demo featuring the results of the CVIS and SAFESPOT projects will be shown every day from Tuesday to Friday.
Finally the “Experience Park” (experience ITS in daily life with all your senses); the “Sustainable Railway in daily life” (an intermodal demonstration site) and a multi-modal “Traffic Control Management” centre will offer the chance to see the wide variety of ITS systems and services now coming into the marketplace.
Technical visits: various technical visits are organised for a modest fee of/visit. Transportation to the Technical Visits will be conducted in hybrid ethanol buses which are fitted with the latest ITS systems on the market.
Exhibition: The Exhibition will offer a unique opportunity to visit over 170 exhibitors, with particular emphasis on traffic safety, mobility for vulnerable users, implementation ITS projects and services and multimodality/co-modality leading a better environment.

The World Congress and Exhibition on Intelligent Transport Systems and Services moves to a new region each year, stopping in Europe every third year. The 16th ITS World Congress takes place in Europe in September 2009, hosted by the city of Stockholm. The Congress and Exhibition will focus on the benefits of ITS for end users and society under the theme "ITS in daily life" and will cover all modes of transport.
In Europe, ITS World Congresses are organised by ERTICO - ITS Europe, with the host country, regions and local authorities as well as ITS America and ITS Japan.
