2006 ADASIS Forum Demo a success

Date: 08 January 2007

30 November event confirms increasing industry interest in the ADAS Horizon concept.

Following the success of a similar event in 2005, the ERTICO-coordinated ADASIS Forum held its 2006 Demo Event 30 November at the premises of ERTICO Partner Siemens VDO in Regensburg, Germany. With 63 participants representing 30 organisations, this successful day was testament to both the increasing interest of the European automotive industry in the ADAS Horizon concept, and the benefits of using digital maps as a predictive sensor to enable or enhance ADAS applications.

The ADASIS Forum, which acts as the MAPS&ADAS project User Forum, is a self-funded industry initiative launched in 2002 and coordinated by ERTICO. It aims to support and promote the development and the implementation of a standardised interface between ADAS applications and digital map content. The Forum counts 30 members from vehicle manufacturers, ADAS suppliers, navigation system suppliers and map providers.

Speakers representing sectors
All participants were welcomed by ADASIS Forum Chairman Dr Jan Loewenau of BMW Group Research and Technology and ADASIS Forum Coordinator Vincent Blervaque of ERTICO.

The morning session started with keynote speeches from Dr D. Zittlau (Vice President ADAS, Siemens VDO), Dr D. Willselman (Head of Projects ConnectedDrive, BMW Group Research and Technology) and S. T’Siobbel (Project Manager on Strategic Research, Tele Atlas). These speakers presented views from the four industry sectors represented in the ADASIS Forum: vehicle manufacturers, ADAS suppliers, navigation system suppliers and map providers. Later, Mr Blervaque gave a general presentation on the ADASIS Forum activities, its major results achieved in 2006 in cooperation with the PReVENT IP MAPS&ADAS project and Forum’s 2007 objectives.

Prototypes presented
During the afternoon, ADASIS Forum Members presented prototype applications enabled and/or enhanced by the use of digital maps to show the level of maturity of the ADAS Horizon concept and the need for the standardised ADAS Interface. The demonstration session included 5 demo vehicles and three PC-based demonstrations, including:

  • Dynamic Pass Prediction (by BMW): Indicates road sections that are not safe for overtaking, based on the driving dynamics and navigation data.
  • Electrical Reversible Retractor (by Autoliv): Provides drivers with a warning or belt slack removal when approaching a curve with excessive speed.
  • Driver Warning System (by MAPS&ADAS): Supports the driver with Accident Hotspot Warning and Speed Limit Warning.
  • ADAS Research Platform (by Navteq): Capabilities and features of the ADAS Research Platform on example of BMW Dynamic Pass
  • Advanced Shifting (by Siemens VDO): Prediction of driving situations using eHorizon for a predictive driving strategy
  • Pro.Pilot (by Siemens VDO): Portfolio of Comfort and Safety ADAS
  • NAVI-Matic (by AISIN AW): Presentation of an advanced adaptive lighting system using maps horizon.
  • Most Likely Path Prediction (by Ford Research): Prediction of most likely path the vehicle will take as a basis for ADAS Horizon provision (IP PReVENT SAFELANE implementation)

To conclude, Mr Blervaque reminded participants about the MAPS&ADAS SafeMap Joint Workshop on 1 February 2007 in Paris and the 2007 ADASIS Forum General Assembly to be held 12 June 2007 at ERTICO in Brussels.
