General News: Berlin eSafety conference to focus on development

5-6 June 2007 high-level event organised by the German Presidency of the EU Council.

 

In the context of the German Presidency of the EU Council, ERTICO – ITS Europe Partner German Federal Ministry for Transport, Building and Urban Affairs will present a high-level eSafety conference 5-6 June 2007 in Berlin.

 

The focus of the eSafety initiative is on the further development of existing driver assistance systems and the introduction of new ones that use special electronics in the vehicle to communicate with the infrastructure.

 

Based on the findings of the eSafety Forum Working Groups at the European level, the following key issues will be discussed at the Berlin conference:

  • Real Time Traffic Information (RTTI) / Communications - Enhancing Traffic Information
  • Human-Machine Interaction (HMI), including eSecurity - the human-machine interface to car multimedia systems, tamperproof technologies
  • Driver Assistance Systems (DAS) - legal situation and assessment, including the new role of motorists in partially automated in-car processes, plus EuroNCAP testing procedures for DAS

Senior officials such as the German Federal Minister of Transport, Building and Urban Affairs Wolfgang Tiefensee, EC Vice President and Transport Commissioner Jacques Barrot, and Dr André Vits, Head of Unit, EC DG Information Society and Media are slated to speak. 

 

Importance of intelligent mobility
The conference will focus on the development perspectives of an essential area of "intelligent mobility" over the next 15 years in the context of the EC White Paper on Transport, along with conclusions for the further development of certain key issues.

 

The German Presidency of the EU Council plans to update the existing results of the eSafety Forum Working Groups at the European level and prepare the information so that it can be used by the European Commission as a basis for political decisions.

 

ERTICO CEO Arnold van Zyl and ERTICO Director for Development and Deployment Michael Nielsen will attend the two-day conference. Representatives from ERTICO Partners ACEA (Association des Constructeurs Européens d’Automobiles), VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, KLPD (Dutch National Police Agency), TNO Traffic and Transport, BMW, Swedish Road Administration, DaimlerChrysler, Czech Ministry of Transport and FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile) will also give presentations throughout the event.
