ERTICO Information Workshop in Ljubljana
Date: 20 February 2007
16 February 2007 event centres on TMC and road charging issues.
ERTICO took part in a 16 February Information Workshop in Ljubljana, Slovenia, organised by ERTICO Partner Slovenian Ministry of Transport. The event, which followed the previous day’s Public Authorities Platform meeting, gathered over 50 Slovenian and regional participants to hear the latest news and developments regarding TMC traffic information broadcast and road charging issues.
Dean Herenda of the Slovenian Ministry of Transport gave a welcome speech in which he highlighted some of the ITS development projects being developed in the country. He also announced the formation of his country’s own ITS organisation devoted to progressing intelligent mobility, ITS Slovenia. ERTICO CEO Arnold van Zyl paid tribute to Slovenia’s efforts in these areas and the regional expertise which can take ITS development even further. He also reminded participants that ITS systems and services have a powerful role to play in keeping people and especially goods moving safely and efficiently throughout Europe and beyond.
TMC in new markets ERTICO Project Manager and TMC Forum Coordinator James Burgess gave a comprehensive set of presentations which highlighted the value of the Traffic Message Channel (TMC) to better road safety and efficiency. The CONNECT project, which is promoting ITS activities in Central and Eastern Europe (and in which ERTICO is a participant), includes the promotion of TMC implementation across the new Member States.
As an example of successful results regarding TMC implementation, Mr Burgess provided a case study of TMC implementation in China through the DYNASTY project.
He also spoke about TMC technology and the process for bringing TMC to new markets, a very relevant topic in Slovenia where development of the supporting elements is already underway.
Road charging realities In the second part of the workshop, ERTICO Project Manager Oene Kerstjens shared his expertise on road charging issues gained through the EC-supported and ERTICO-coordinated RCI project. Mr Kerstjens was joined by Philippe Lassauce, Co-Chair of the RCI Steering Committee. They highlighted the status and achievements in the project to date.
In addition, four presentations highlighting the status/developments on road charging deployment in the CONNECT countries. Discussion centred on how the European interoperability model could contribute to these developments.
