Helmut Matschi presents 'Future
ITS Services'
To round up an interesting and insightful day, Helmut Matschi from Continental and member of the Supervisory Board, gave a presentation on the future of ITS services. He identified three “megatrends” : safety, information, and change of lifestyle, and analysed how these trends impact on user needs and expectations regarding ITS services. He concluded that seamless integration of devices was key to information management in the vehicle, while integrated and connected safety were the future of advanced driver assistance systems.
A special highlight followed in the evening with the ERTICO networking dinner, where Zita Gurmai, Member of the European Parliament and Rapporteur on the Intelligent Car Initiative, delivered an inspiring speech. Mrs Gurmai said that it was vital to enhance efficiency of transport in Europe, in order to improve road safety, enhance environmentally friendliness of transport, and to meet the needs of European businesses. She went on to highlight the benefits of ITS in reaching this aim, as ITS would help to optimise vehicle-road-driver interaction. However, Mrs Gurmai concluded that there were important conditions to be met for large-scale deployment of ITS: an intelligent infrastructure had to be in place, affordability for the user should be addressed, and an efficient driver-vehicle interface was needed, which would enable drivers to use in-vehicle devices properly. Mrs Gurmai’s speech was met with an enthusiastic reaction from the audience, and was further discussed over dinner by the more than 100 guests.
