General News: TMC consortium begins work in Hungary
Date: 18 March 2008
Local companies look at ITS to move towards more efficient domestic transportation.
The Research for Hungarian TMC Alternative Data Sources and Users Consortium began its practical work, the primary objective of which is the integrated development of a unified domestic transportation information collection and distribution system. On the domestic plan, to date, members of the consortium (Térképtár Ltd., TrafficNav Ltd., iCell Ltd. and Bay Zoltán Foundation for Applied Research – BayLOGI) have achieved substantial results in the GIS, GPS navigation-based systems, satellite-based vehicle tracking and fleet management fields.
Currently, domestic TMC (Traffic Message Channel)-based services are pending implementation, developed by one of the consortium members, TrafficNav Ltd. For domestic end-users, TMC is a freely accessible service, which can be reached with navigation devices that are already enabling it. Even now, the service is open for any map database owner or navigation device producer.
Throughout its two year time span, the project plans to achieve the following main objectives:
- Expand traffic data sources and continually improving the quality of the existing service
- Elaborate on public transportation services based on TMC technology (provision of TMC-based passenger information and schedule information)
- Extend TMC-based services towards logistics systems
- Develop self-organising community transportation solutions, based on WEB 2.0 and WEB 3.0 platforms
