The SIMBA project offers a stimulating calendar of events - be sure to mark your agenda!
The EC-supported, ERTICO-coordinated SIMBA project has an exciting calendar lined up this year with events in Europe, Africa, Asia and Latin America. The project has planned six events in 2007 which will bring together relevant stakeholders in order to build on SIMBA’s objective of strengthening international road research cooperation.
Mark these dates:
Aalborg ITS Congress Special Session 5: “Opportunities for International Cooperation with key Emerging Markets” 18 June 2007, 11.00-12.30 Aalborg, Denmark
Guest speakers from Brazil, China, India and South Africa will present their transport priorities, challenges, solutions required and cooperation opportunities with the EU.
SIMBA European Priority Workshop 21 June 2007, 9:00-16:00 Hotel Hvide Hus, Aalborg, Denmark
The workshop will discuss priority areas for road transport research cooperation between Europe and Brazil, China, India and South Africa. Discussions at the event should establish concrete areas for future collaboration between Europe and these emerging markets.

South Africa National Event 12-13 July 2007 CSIR International Convention Centre, Pretoria
The SIMBA South Africa National Event, which will directly follow the 26th Southern African Transport Conference (SATC 2007), 9-12 July in Pretoria, will discuss the results from the December 2006 Priority Workshop held in Stellenbosch. Aims of the event include the creation of joint EU-South Africa expert working groups, project proposals and joint road transport research roadmaps.

Brazil National Event 4-5 October 2007 Hotel Royal Palm Plaza, Campinas
The SIMBA Brazil National Event will be held in conjunction with the CBR&C 2007 (5th Brazilian Congress of Highways and Concessions) and BRASVIAS 2007 (5th International Exhibition of Highway Products) from 4-5 October. Over one thousand participants, including high level government officials, are expected to attend these events.
During the Brazil National Event, automotive topics will focus on commercial vehicles, transport of cargo, the effect of commercial vehicles on roads and vice versa. Discussion on infrastructure topics will include improving efficiency in cargo transport, maintaining and improving roads, road safety and behavioural problems, pavement asset management and maintenance, environmental impact, noise and recycling, and developing new infrastructure. ITS topics to be explored include intelligent traffic lights, incident management and detection, awareness raising amongst government and citizens about ITS, roles of ITS stakeholders and ITS policies. A showcase of European technologies in Brazil is also planned.

China National Event 8 October 2007 Beijing Exhibition Centre, Beijing
Directly following the 14th ITS World Congress in Beijing, the SIMBA China National Event aims to increase road transport research cooperation between Europe and China. At the event, both sides will be able to exchange technological know-how and best practices and make concrete cooperation suggestions in the areas of ITS, automotive and infrastructure. Guests from the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology and Ministry of Communications, who are responsible for making national level policies in the transport arena, will be invited to give guidance on research priorities appropriate in China.

India National Event 21-22 November 2007 India Habitat Centre, New Delhi
The SIMBA India National Event will present progress of the project proposals that were identified in the Priority Workshop of November 2006. Breakout sessions are foreseen as well as technical workshops on priority topics. The event will be geared towards the preparation of demonstration projects and concrete cooperation activities between Europe and India.
ITS topics to be covered include ITS policy, standardisation and regulation, public transport management, electronic toll collection, digital roadmap and navigation systems, traffic information and traffic management. Automotive topics to be discussed include design and development of flexi fuel vehicles, vision and radar sensors for obstacle detection and collision avoidance and systems regulations and processes for recycling. Infrastructure topics include pavement management systems, driving patterns on four lane roads and pedestrian impact of buses and trucks.
Aims of the event include the creation of joint EU-India expert working groups, project proposals and joint road transport research roadmaps.
