IP PReVENT and AIDE meet to discuss HMI, validation issues
Date: 29 July 2005
The EC-supported IP PReVENT held a 29 June workshop in Athens, Greece in cooperation with the AIDE IP about HMI issues. ERTICO is a participant in both Integrated Projects (IPs). Hosted by ICCS, the event was a common initiative of the IP PReVENT subprojects LATERAL SAFE, SAFELANE, SASPENCE and WILLWARN, along with the AIDE IP. A follow-up meeting 30 June was devoted to validation issues.
The objectives of the 29 June workshop were to discuss the IP PReVENT’s vertical subprojects' HMI needs and concepts as well as explore synergies between the different HMI solutions. It also aimed to discuss warning strategies, identify type and depth of AIDE support to IP PReVENT's HMI needs, present AIDE HMI concepts and explore the possibilities of integrating these concepts into IP PReVENT's HMI solutions. Participants also hoped to identify possibilities of enhanced or new advanced ADAS functions through the combination and/or integration of “first generation” (first phase) IP PReVENT applications.
Workshop results Participants agreed that HMI issues were very important and should be taken into account by all application developers. They also concluded that closer cooperation between the AIDE and PReVENT IPs is needed to integrate their results in the future and develop systems that can cooperate with one another. From the start, IP PReVENT identified the need for a strong and common validation plan for its applications. Validation includes a number of aspects - functional validation, risk analysis, controllability issues - which are partly covered by the IP PReVENT subproject RESPONSE 3, of which ERTICO is also a participant. Other aspects of validation are related to the evaluation of the applications in terms of usability and safety relevance using both lab tools, simulators and road tests with end users. To discuss these issues, a meeting following the HMI workshop was organised in Athens on 30 June. Representatives from the IP PReVENT subprojects and AIDE IP drafted a plan towards the implementation of the RESPONSE 3 methodologies and tools, as well as the development of a common evaluation approach. Risk analysis was identified as a critical issue, along with user tests in order to check user friendliness of new systems and validate HMI solutions and warning strategies. Participants proposed to use the AIDE expertise on these issues as much as possible. For more information, visit the IP PReVENT and AIDE websites, or contact the projects’ representatives at ERTICO:
