New ERTICO project will improve digital maps
Date: 08 March 2006
The new ERTICO coordinated, EC-supported FeedMAP project kicked-off on 1 March 2006 with a two-day meeting in Brussels. With a €4 million budget distributed over two and a half years, the project aims to develop a framework that will allow for easier and faster updating of digital maps. The framework will improve transport efficiency and increase road safety by creating a sustainable source of map updates at a reduced cost for navigation and Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) applications.
FeedMAP will study the commercial and technical feasibility of map data feedback using the ActMAP project’s map updating a standardised mechanism delivering map updates. Map data feedback is needed for detecting changes in the road network faster by using cars as map probes to check if the digital maps are accurate enough.
The main focus will be on static and semi-static changes of the maps. In addition, events such as traffic jams or accidents can be added to the maps using different channels, making them dynamic. Map providers and public authorities will both contribute to the map information.
The FeedMAP consortium includes 13 Partners: BMW Forschung und Technik, Centro Ricerche Fiat, DaimlerChrysler, ICCS, Magneti Marelli Sistemi Elettronici, NAVIGON, Navteq, Oberste Baubehörde im Bayerischen Staatsministerium des Innern, PTV, Swedish Road Administration, Tele Atlas and Volvo Technology AB.
