ERTICO Partner wins another tall order in Malaysia.

Eight years ago, ERTICO – ITS Europe Partner Efkon partnered with United Engineers Malaysia to install a nationwide multimodal interoperable transport payment system with 20 operators and on 1,700km of highways. Today, this transportation payment system has four million users.

“We are happy to start 2008 with such a big success,” says Efkon CEO Dr. Helmut Rieder and explains the success story in Malaysia, where Efkon has retained 100% market shares. Overall, Asia has become one of our strongest growth markets for Efkon with more than 80% market shares over the last few years.

For the current project Efkon has been awarded the contract by IRAT/RSSB Sdh Bdh. for delivering another 200,000 next generation multi-lane free flow on board units (OBU) to meet the goal of one million OBUs and has a package order inclusive multi-lane free flow equipment of more than 5 million Euros.

“The technology we provide can already be described as next generation Electronic tolling systems based on ISO CALM standard active bi-directional infrared communications”, adds Dr. Helmut Rieder. Our state-of-the art infrared ensures perfect handling at toll plazas without interrupting the traffic flow.” In addition to tolling and electronic payment this technology enables ITS applications to improve navigation, traffic safety and high-speed car-to-car communication.

Another unique feature is the capability to insert an electronic Smartcard into the OBU. The Efkon integrated contact-less Smartcard contains an electronic “purse” that can also be used to pay for tolling as well as for public transport, taxis, petrol and parking.
