Partner News: Egis wins project award for SafeMap

PREDIT is the French National programme for Research and Development in transports. The recent PREDIT seminar (called Carrefour du PREDIT) was the concluding event of the 3rd programme (2002 – 2007) and on that occasions several projects were awarded, among them ERTICO Partner Egis for the SafeMap project in the category “Europe”.

The aim of the SafeMap project was to develop a new navigation map or geo-localised database concept including road safety-related data, evaluate its socio-economic impact and its suitability for drivers, and subsequently propose examples of ADAS-type on-board applications to ‘aid anticipation’.

Relevant technical specifications were also developed, and organisational as well as legal requirements for creating and maintaining a database examined. The final outcome of the project is a comprehensive tool designed to help taking an informed decision for the implementation of e-safety systems. Targeted stakeholders include authorities, map providers, and the car industry.

Safemap was undertaken under the DEUFRAKO umbrella (Franco – German cooperation programme for Transport Research), by a international consortium comprising :

• Research laboratories: BASt with Bochum University in Germany, LCPC/LIVIC and CETE engineering consulting agency network in France
• Automotive manufacturers: Daimler Chrysler, Renault Trucks, PSA Peugeot Citroën
• Digital map suppliers: TeleAtlas, Navteq.

The project was coordinated by Egis Mobilité. The project was supported by the French Road Safety Directorate (MEEDAD) through PREDIT and by the German Ministry in charge of Education and Research.

Co-operation was established with MAP&ADAS, another project related to the development of safety orientated navigation maps, co-ordinated by ERTICO. This co-operation led the organisation of a common workshop in Paris in February 2007, organised with the support of ITS France.
