Partner News: Oracle presents end-to-end solution for vehicle information

Date: 14 December 2007

ERTICO Partner solution for integrating vehicle information and ICT receives praise.

At the OpenWorld event in November 2007, ERTICO – ITS Europe Partner Oracle presented a live end-to-end solution demonstrating the integration of car-generated information with several applications enabling effective real-time access to information from and about the vehicle, and facilitating the use of this information in applications such as CRM, business intelligence and analytic tools.

Oracle believes that access to car-generated information will have a profound effect on a wide range of businesses, individuals and institutions. Automotive manufacturers will be able to track the performance of their cars more closely and potentially anticipate costly recalls; they will also be able to provide novel services to their customers. Car owners will likely be able to profit from a better diagnostic and advanced warning of problems with their vehicle. Other business models enabled by the Oracle solution will include pay-per-use insurance, improved fleet and leasing management and improvement in logistics and transport to name just a few.

Praise for solution
The new Oracle solution is built on Oracle's Telematics Foundation Fusion Middleware and employs the Application Integration Architecture approach to the solution design. This, according to the information and technology research and advisory firm Gartner "is the first end-to-end vehicle ICT offering by a major IT provider." Gartner acknowledges that the integration of car information with applications "creates a significant competitive differentiator for Oracle".

In a research note from 26 November 2007, Gartner states that "Oracle's telematics approach is realising a long time goal in the automotive industry: integrating vehicle- and customer-specific information in real-time across multiple process areas." Gartner added that "Oracle's new telematics offering is a comprehensive solution for the automotive and vehicle information and communication technology (ICT) industries, and it will raise the bar for competing offerings." Due to the open platform approach of the current telematics solution it is rapidly adaptable to the proprietary systems of all car manufacturers and easily integrated with applications from many vendors.

Gartner goes on to recommend that vehicle manufacturers "consider Oracle's solution approach for your vehicle ICT strategy."  And suggests to automotive suppliers, device manufacturers and service providers (including telematics service providers) and content providers that they "identify how [their] offering will complement Oracle's telematics solution and seek joint marketing or distribution opportunities that build on Oracle's product".
