The workshop will look at joint EU and Indian cooperation in road transport research with a main focus on the three key areas:
- Public transport management - a pilot project in intermodal transport and traffic management for large events, in preparation for the 2010 New Delhi Commonwealth Games.
- Electronic Toll Collection - a pilot scheme for a nationwide common architecture for toll collection, to start with a pilot on one of India’s National Highway corridors.
- Alternative fuels - work to convert all New Delhi buses to run on hydrogen in time for the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
Other key priorities for discussion will include freight and fleet Management, road pricing and intelligent vehicle dynamics. Apart from immediate pilot projects, the SIMBA project’s India activities aim to develop a joint EU-India road transport research roadmap setting out both short and long-term cooperation priorities. Working with the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers and the Core Group for Automotive Research, the workshop hosts have invited decision-makers from the Government of India, high-level researchers, and members from automobile and IT industry in India to support SIMBA activities.
