SpeedAlert activities
Date: 11 February 2005
The EC-funded SpeedAlert project held a meeting 24-25 January in Stockholm, Sweden, attended by consortium members and EC Project Officer Bipin Radia of DG TREN. At the meeting, Jonas Sundberg (SWECO) presented the implementation strategy methodology developed within PROSPER project. Johnny Svedlund (SRA) presented the on-going activities with regards to ISA (Intelligent Speed Adaptation) procurement decided by the Swedish Road Administration (SRA). An important point is that SRA requirements for such an in-vehicle ISA system is compliant with the key principles agreed in SpeedAlert Committee (including an informative system which is voluntary-based and has the possibility for the driver to turn it off). Louise Norlin (SRA) presented the Swedish national road database (NVDB) developed in collaboration with the SRA, LantMäteriet (Swedish National Land Survey), the association of Swedish municipalities and the Swedish forest industries federation. Speed limits are included in the database, and adapted organisation to provide initial data collection and updates has been set up. The ISA implementation managed by SRA will have access to the NVDB for the integration of speed limit information into in-vehicle digital maps.
In addition, SpeedAlert had some liaison meetings in Paris on 3 February. It discussed the integration of end-users (drivers) in the definition of speed alert implementation strategy with the FIA Foundation in Paris. A meeting with the OECD/ECMT explored cooperation between SpeedAlert and their working group dedicated to speed management.
SpeedAlert plans to organise a Special Session on 2 June during the ITS in Europe Congress in Hannover. Dedicated to Intelligent Speed Management, the Session will also include a presentation of SpeedAlert's final results and its future priorities.
