SpeedAlert Forum forges ahead with first workshop

Date: 09 February 2006

The first workshop of the ERTICO-coordinated SpeedAlert Forum was organised 31 January 2006 at ERTICO In Brussels. With 48 participants from the European Commission, Public Authorities, automotive industry (vehicle manufacturers, navigation system suppliers, map providers, application developers), research institutes and other European organisations, this event allowed stakeholders to stay informed about on-going activities, exchange viewpoints and discuss remaining issues central to intelligent speed management. The SpeedAlert Forum continues the SpeedAlert activities which were first initiated in August 2001 with the SpeedAlert Committee and the EC-supported SpeedAlert project, which ran from May 2004 - June 2005.

Respecting the priorities developed in the SpeedAlert project, two plenary discussions were organised at the Workshop. One addressed the provision and update of speed limit information by means of an appropriate cooperation between public authorities (at both the national and local levels) and map providers, while the other investigated the need to develop a sound business case.

Successful multi-sector activity

As a prime example of a successful multi-sector activity, SpeedAlert has shown the benefit and value of having an open discussion platform accessible to all stakeholders for developing a consensus-based approach and addressing the remaining issues in close cooperation with other relevant activities at the European (eSafety Forum Implementation RoadMap and Digital Maps Working Groups, MAPS&ADAS, ADASIS Forum, EuroRoadS, CVIS...) and national (Sweden, the Netherlands, France, UK) levels to support short-term implementation.

According to the deployment roadmap developed in the SpeedAlert project, the first generation of in-vehicle speed limit information and warning system has been on the market since 2005 as an additional feature of an increasing number of navigation systems. As the premier platform for intelligent speed management issues in Europe, the SpeedAlert Forum intends to play a major role to support such deployment and coordinate the enabling of the implementation next-generation speed alert applications.

If you are interested in SpeedAlert activities and would like to join the SpeedAlert Forum, please feel free to contact SpeedAlert Forum Coordinator Mr Vincent Blervaque at ERTICO
