Improving ITS training and education

As ITS has become an integral part of the mobility sector, there is a demand for a “new breed” of professionals that existing universities, institutions, and professional training bodies are not well equipped to meet. A very small proportion of those working in the field of ITS have had formal ITS training, and only a limited number of universities offer a comprehensive ITS education. As a result, there is an acute lack of the skills required to deal with the complex technical, organisational, and economic aspects that form part of successful ITS initiatives.

The ETNITE project aims to change this, undertaking a targeted effort to improve the scope and quality of ITS training and education in Europe. The project supports the European Network on ITS Training and Education (ITSEduNet), a pan-European, multi-sector organisation that aims to offer validated ITS training material. The goal is to enhance technical and professional competence in the field of ITS, as well as to improve the knowledge and general awareness of the benefits of ITS.

Objectives

• Produce educational resources for trainees and professionals for both the public and private sector.
• Promote the development of e-learning methodologies.
• Increase the general awareness of ITS among transport professionals, especially decision makers in public administrations and students.
• Ensure that ITS R&D results are directly transferred and integrated into teaching materials.
• Exploit existing ITS applications as demonstration sites for teaching purposes.
• Facilitate the future operation of the ITS EduNet.
• Support European industry by ensuring the availability of state-of-the-art know-how in ITS and promote the worldwide reputation of European ITS products and services.
