ITSWAP

Promoting ITS applications over WAP

As a generic protocol, WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) is an emerging industry standard for wireless Internet-like services and information on handheld devices. As it was developed without regard for the in-vehicle environment, the ERTICO-led ITSWAP project advances and promotes WAP services to cater for the ITS industry’s specific requirements.

Objectives

  • Define and demonstrate WAP delivery mechanisms for various on-board and off-board ITS applications in different field trial sites across Europe
  • Draft and recommend human-machine interface (HMI) design principles for in-vehicle ITSWAP services and business models
  • Produce and define system requirements and mechanisms to retrieve positioning information
  • Develop service roaming scenarios between test sites and in-vehicle platforms
  • Promote the adoption of WAP as an ITS platform for both service providers and the car industry
  • Demonstrate and feed ITS requirements into the WAP Forum
