On 15 May Okan University organised and hosted a workshop on ITS. Participants included the Turkish Ministry, ERTICO - ITS Europe, the Fraunhofer Institute and international companies such as Siemens, TOFAS-FIAT and Ford. The workshop addressed the research priorities for ITS as well as intelligent transport and automotive technologies applications. The last part of the workshop took up the discussion begun in the previous workshop on ITS organised at Okan University on 9 December 2011, that embraced the areas of mobility, transport and infrastructure; environment, energy and resources; security; and finally design and production systems.

The workshop was opened by Mr Çağlayan, the Turkish Minister for Economy, who gave information about Turkey’s vision on Intelligent Transport Technology, the positive evolution of the economy and the country’s infrastructure development. The meeting aimed to determine Turkey’s priorities on Intelligent Transportation Technologies Research and Innovation. NETAS Company CEO Mujdat Altay was also a key speaker of the event and presented the importance of embedded software in the automotive industry. Paul Kompfner, Head of Cooperative Mobility at ERTICO, presented ERTICO Partnership activities on Cooperative ITS and gave an overview of projects with ERTICO involvement in the different areas of energy efficiency, electromobility, future internet and large-scale initiatives for innovation and deployment. He emphasised the opportunities for Okan University and Turkish industry partners in these new developments, and for Istanbul as city pilot in both FI-PPP Phase 2 and ELSA/EIP Smart Cities pilots.

Automotive OEMs in Europe and Turkey have increased expenditure on research and development and are increasingly equipping their vehicles with active safety, intelligent vehicle and especially hybrid electric power train technologies. Okan University’s Transport Technologies and Intelligent Automotive Systems Application and Research Centre has reached a high level of competence in hybrid electric vehicles, active safety and intelligent vehicle technologies. By using national and European opportunities and by concentrating on improving high technology research capability in automotive control and mechatronics areas, the Centre would be able to develop innovative transport technologies for intelligent, safe, ecological and efficient road transport.
