Supporting the driver, preventing accidents

The Integrated Project (IP) PReVENT is developing, testing and spreading awareness of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) for improved road safety. If used broadly, thousands of lives could be saved by such preventive and active safety applications every year.

Combining sensor information, communications and positioning technologies, these applications help drivers avoid accidents by informing them about potential dangers, warning them if there is no reaction to the information and actively assisting or ultimately intervening if necessary. The applications are also designed to protect not only vehicle occupants, but also other potentially vulnerable traffic participants, such as pedestrians and cyclists.

IP PReVENT’s ultimate objective is to accelerate the European-wide introduction of such ADAS applications for safety. The project includes over 50 partners and is made up of subprojects covering specific road traffic and accident situations.


  • Develop and validate safety applications with the following functions: safe speed and safe following, lateral support and driver monitoring, intersection safety, function integration, vulnerable road users and collision mitigation.
  • Create a common architecture for preventive and active safety applications.
  • Develop an advanced perception platform for sensors and sensor data fusion.
  • Develop a Code of Practice for development and testing of preventive safety applications.
  • Improve collection of data for use in high accuracy in-vehicle digital maps.
  • Develop and validate a standard interface between ADAS applications and in-vehicle maps.
  • Create guidelines for safety impact evaluation.
  • Integrate safety applications.
  • Conduct a common demonstration for creation of public awareness.
