It’s full steam ahead for the ERTICO-coordinated GNSS-enabled Services Convergence project! It started its preparations in March 2009. This summer it finalised the contractual agreements with the GNSS Supervisory Authority and the project is now in full swing working on the improvement of the commercial perspective for deployment of GNSS-enabled mass-market and tolling services.
To make EGNOS and Galileo receivers enablers for mass-market Intelligent Transport Services, they should become standard components in cheap End User equipment. The End User should be able to choose from a wide range of value added and tolling services that can be used seamlessly anywhere in Europe on one device and with one contract. Businesses should be able to offer and operate services simultaneously, without the risk of interference or loss of revenue.
The technology to run multiple services simultaneously exists - the challenge is to create a framework establishing trust between the different companies as well as ensuring and making verifiable that one service is not degrading the performance of another.
GSC defines, implements and validates such a reference framework that is a prerequisite for making EGNOS or Galileo standard enablers in End User equipment of mass-market transport services. It will be through the establishment of such a mass-market that the value of GALILEO and EGNOS can be fully leveraged.
GSC will show and involve interested stakeholders through the GSC Service Submission Contest starting second half of 2010.
The GSC consortium counts 11 partners and is at full speed now. It is funded through the GNSS Supervisory Authority, 7th Framework Programme and will end in February 2011.. For further information, visite the GSC website
