The SATIE support action concluded in 2014, producing a proposal for a “virtual European ITS testbed” comprising a cluster of local and national test beds for different kinds of transport-ICT (ITS) able to meet the future needs of key decision-makers in public and private sectors. The SATIE concept includes a model of ITS innovation incubators, an approach little applied in the ITS domain.

A Europe-wide network of ITS testbeds would greatly increase the scale of trials possible; also encourage synergies between testbeds of different purposes and characteristics, e.g. those for cooperative systems, for traffic management and for automated driving. This could increase the interest of customers who could test products and services across a diverse set of environments.
