Telematics technology forms the basis for many of the ITS applications currently on offer. For example, the automatic collection of road tolls, intelligent management of road usage and automatic collision notification, all depend on telematics. The technology is also increasingly being used to provide remote diagnostics, making it possible to automatically alert a service provider if a mechanical or electronic problem with the car is detected. Other forthcoming applications include on-demand navigation, audio and audio-visual entertainment. The goal of the Telematics Forum is to facilitate the provision of personalised telematics services anytime, anywhere, through any device and using any network.
The Forum brings together leading service providers, control centre operators, middleware providers, terminal manufacturers and the automotive industry to work on the definition and market adoption of enabling standards for telematics service delivery.
