ERTICO was established in 1992 to bridge the gap between research and deployment of intelligent transport systems.
Today, ERTICO's cross-sector partnership of companies, organisations, regions and academia continues to develop and deploy new approaches to safe, resilient and sustainable mobility in Europe and beyond. From our base in Brussels, we are coordinating innovation for tomorrow's journey.
1985
A White Paper on ‘Completing the Internal Market’ signals the launch of the EU Single Market, adopted in 1993, focusing on removing physical, technical, and fiscal barriers.
1986
The Single European Act officially launched the free movement of goods, services, capital, and people, with values intrinsic to ERTICO’s vision til today.
1990
The gap between research and deployment of intelligent transport technologies leads to the creation of ERTICO – ITS Europe.
1992
Under the motto, “Cooperation and Coordination. For better transport in Europe”, ERTICO launches its Strategic Plan for Advanced Transport Telematics in Europe.
1993
Linked with the Advanced Transport Telematics (DRIVE II) programme, ERTICO coordinates the CORD project, providing evaluation advice on European ITS applications.
1994
The ITS World Congress takes place in Paris, marking the first global gathering of the ITS community.
1997
ERTICO publishes its 20-Year Vision, anticipating the evolution of ITS markets.
1997
ERTICO co-organises the first EU-China ITS Conference in Beijing.
1998
ERTICO launches a Partner-led TMC Forum to guide future ITS service development, while the ITS City Pioneers project delivers insights for urban mobility planning.
1999
The first ITS European Congress in Amsterdam bore witness to what ITS can bring to the different modes of transport.
2001
At its 10 years, the Partnership reaches 86 members and launches activities supporting eCall deployment.
2002
ERTICO introduces the ADASIS Forum, today known as ADASIS SPRL, to integrate digital map data into advanced driver-assistance systems.
2003
ERTICO coordinates the eSafety Forum on intelligent integrated road safety systems.
2004
ERTICO established the ITS Nationals Platform in 2001, today known as the Network of National ITS Associations, with up to 30 members across Europe.
2006
ERTICO introduces the Cooperative Vehicle-Infrastructure Systems (CVIS) Live project, a flagship initiative for the evolution of connected mobility.
2007
ERTICO supports the creation of TISA (Travel Information Services Association), setting global standards for travel information services.
2008
ERTICO contributes to the Commission’s ‘Action Plan for the Deployment of ITS in Europe’ and begins its first Field Operational Tests for ADAS (Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems).
2011
The Partnership reaches 100 members while leading cross-border pilots demonstrating the pan-European eCall system.
2012
The 19th ITS World Congress in Vienna sets a record with over 20,000 attendees.
2013
ERTICO establishes TN-ITS, a multi-stakeholder platform enhancing transport efficiency, automation, and applications such as MaaS and smart parking.
2014
ERTICO strengthens public-private cooperation through the establishment of the MaaS Alliance, today known as the Mobility Alliance, as well as its Innovation Platform, TM 2.0, focusing on data exchange and traffic management.
2015
Two new innovation platforms are launched, including SENSORIS for standardised data interfaces and eMI3 for EV interoperability.
2016
The establishment of the European Truck Platooning Challenge demonstrates cross-border platooning collaboration.
2017
As ERTICO celebrates its 25th anniversary, it forms a strong partnership of 121 members across 8 sectors, while co-organising the first European Conference on Connected & Automated Driving in cooperation with the Commission.
2018
eCall becomes mandatory.
2019
ERTICO adopts its new branding to date, and organises its 13th ITS European Congress in Eindhoven, which marks a highlight of emerging technologies and standardisation advances from TISA, SENSORIS, and eMI3.
2020
ERTICO organises a Virtual ITS Congress during the first year of the pandemic.
2020
ERTICO launches a new initiative, City Moonshot, aiming to interview 300 cities and regions to understand their perspectives on key mobility topics.
2021
The 27th ITS World Congress in Hamburg showcases new technologies, including unmanned aerial vehicles.
2022
ERTICO establishes EAVP, an Innovation Platform unlocking Automated Valet Parking potential and leads the coordination of the DFRS platform, enabling trusted sharing of safety-related data within the SRTI ecosystem.

ERTICO welcomes its new Chief Executive Officer to date, Mr Joost Vantomme.
2023
ERTICO is honored the HR Excellence Award for 'Best Workplace Redesign' following its relocation to its new offices in Brussels.
2024
ERTICO organises the 30th ITS World Congress in Dubai, bringing the global ITS community in the Middle East for the first time.
2024
ERTICO introduces its new Innovation Platform on ITS-Driven Innovative Aerial Services.
2025
ERTICO publishes its new vision for 2035, focusing on four strategic areas, accompanied by defined enablers and outcomes.
2025
Following the City Moonshot, ERTICO launches the National Moonshot to map governance frameworks and strengthen data-driven mobility policymaking.

ERTICO marks its 35th Anniversary, celebrating decades of long-lasting collaboration, innovation and deployment with its Partnership of 115 members.
