The metaCCAZE project is taking important steps toward real-world deployment. During its recent plenary meeting in Munich, Germany the project partners experienced one of the city’s innovative use cases for sustainable logistics being accelerated through involvement in metaCCAZE. The site visit was to the new Municipal Cycle Logistics Hub at the Paketposthalle, Germany’s largest hub dedicated to cargo bike deliveries.
Munich, one of the project’s Trailblazer Cities, has set ambitious goals to cover 80% of its traffic with zero-emission vehicles, local public transport, walking, and cycling. The new Municipal Cycle Logistics Hub, launched in July 2025, is central to achieving this goal. Designed to handle pallet goods, refrigerated logistics, and standard parcels, this new logistics hub enables faster, cleaner, and more reliable last-mile delivery of various goods across the city. By helping reduce emissions and traffic congestion, the facility supports Munich’s environmental ambitions.
metaCCAZE partners visited this new hub on 16-17 September as the project held its plenary meeting in Munich. They could directly ask questions to developers and try out the cargo bikes themselves. The hub will continue to grow, with future plans including battery swapping stations, repair services, and consulting services to support businesses in shifting to cargo bikes for their deliveries. An exhibition area showcasing different cargo bike models is also in development, offering a space to discover first-hand the potential of this form of logistics.
Coordinated by ERTICO, metaCCAZE brings together 44 partners to develop and deploy innovative electric, automated, and connected solutions for safer, more efficient, and zero-emission urban mobility.
The Munich site visit and meeting also marked the first exchange with the metaCCAZE Observer Cities, which will play an important role in scaling up the project innovations. Ten cities were selected through an open call in January 2025 to join the project and develop tailored implementation plans to adapt the project solutions in their own local contexts. Representatives from Bremen, Naples, and the Nilufer Municipality in Bursa joined the Munich visit and meeting and engaged directly with the partners on the technologies developed. This first collaborative exchange will be followed by further site visits in Tampere, Limassol, Malta, and Miskolc. Observer Cities will take part in these workshops and demonstrations to refine their replication ideas. Between 2026 and 2027, each Observer City will define its own implementation plan, ensuring that the solutions tested within metaCCAZE can be replicated and adapted across Europe. This new important step showcased a shared commitment to accelerating the transition toward climate-neutral cities.
