SWARCO has recently established SWARCO ITS, a dedicated entity focused on delivering advanced intelligent transportation systems (ITS) and digital traffic management solutions worldwide. The move reinforces the company’s commitment to supporting smarter, safer and more sustainable mobility through innovative technologies and integrated traffic management platforms.
Headquartered in Austria, SWARCO is a global traffic technology group providing solutions ranging from road marking and traffic signals to urban traffic management, highway systems and public transport technologies. Its ITS portfolio combines data analytics, communication technologies and control systems to improve traffic flow, increase safety and reduce environmental impacts across road networks.
The launch of SWARCO ITS coincides with the company securing a major long-term contract from ASFINAG, Austria’s motorway operator. Under this agreement, SWARCO will support the development and operation of advanced traffic management systems across the Austrian motorway network. The project will enhance the monitoring and control of traffic flows, enabling operators to respond more efficiently to congestion, incidents and changing traffic conditions while improving safety for road users.
The contract highlights the growing importance of intelligent traffic management in modern mobility systems. By integrating digital technologies, sensors and real-time data analysis, traffic operators can optimise existing infrastructure, reduce delays and provide more reliable information to drivers and transport authorities.
For SWARCO ITS, the project represents an important milestone. It demonstrates the organisation’s capability to deliver large-scale ITS solutions that support national infrastructure operators while contributing to broader mobility goals such as efficiency, sustainability and road safety.
As cities and road authorities increasingly turn to intelligent systems to manage complex mobility networks, initiatives such as SWARCO ITS and projects like the ASFINAG contract illustrate how digital traffic management is becoming a cornerstone of future transport systems.
ASFINAG Executive Board Director Hartwig Hufnagl commented: “Intelligent traffic management is the future of our mobility strategy. We are therefore particularly pleased that the Austrian and internationally active traffic technology specialist SWARCO prevailed as the best bidder with its strong quality. This keeps value creation in Austria. These displays also score with their relatively low power consumption, which is an important criterion for us as a sustainable mobility partner.”
Michael Schuch, CEO of the SWARCO Group explained: “I am delighted that SWARCO can continue the successful direct cooperation with ASFINAG in the field of variable message signs, which has been ongoing since 2020. This contract serves as proof of the motorway operator’s confidence in our LED variable message sign technology made in Austria, which has established global leadership in quality thanks to optical brilliance, high energy efficiency, long service life, minimized maintenance needs, and sustainable production.”
