The City of Weiden is the first municipality to deploy Yutraffic awareAI 2.0, the next generation of AI-enabled traffic detection from Yunex Traffic. The deployment marks a key milestone in the global rollout of Yutraffic awareAI 2.0, combining advanced AI-enabled traffic detection, real-time insights and seamless integration to help cities improve safety, traffic flow and operational efficiency.
In Weiden, Yutraffic awareAI 2.0 serves as the primary traffic detection system, providing the real-time data needed for responsive traffic control and continuous traffic optimization.
In August 2026, the City of Weiden and Yunex Traffic successfully upgraded a signalized intersection that had been identified as a high-accident location. Alongside upgraded signal phasing for key traffic movements, the city deployed Yutraffic awareAI 2.0 to provide AI-enabled traffic detection and real-time traffic insights. The entire traffic light system was redesigned and reprogrammed to increase safety and optimize traffic flow for all road users using real-time data.
“We want people to see real improvements in their daily journeys, with less waiting, fewer delays and smoother traffic flow. This pilot project will help us better understand how AI can make traffic signals more responsive and effective,” said Christian Rockinger, Civil Engineering Office, City of Weiden.
The solution provides the data needed to continuously improve traffic operations. It records turning movements, measures traffic volumes and classifies different types of road users (including pedestrians and cyclists), enabling traffic engineers to better understand traffic patterns and support future multimodal traffic management. Road users benefit from smoother traffic flow, shorter waiting times, and increased safety. Over time, it offers an alternative to traditional detection technologies such as induction loops.
Making intersections safer and more accessible
Building on the initial deployment, Weiden has already selected an additional intersection for future implementation. New applications will focus on improving safety and convenience for pedestrians and cyclists. Pedestrians can be detected automatically before reaching a push-button request point, enabling earlier crossing requests. The system can also extend pedestrian green times when larger groups or people with disabilities require more time to cross. The technology further supports bicycle prioritization strategies by detecting approaching cyclists and enabling more responsive signal control. When crossings are no longer occupied, unused green time can be reallocated to other traffic movements, improving overall intersection efficiency.
“As the first city to deploy Yutraffic awareAI 2.0, Weiden is helping demonstrate the potential of next-generation AI-enabled traffic detection. The solution not only improves traffic management efficiency but also delivers measurable benefits in safety, accessibility and comfort for all road users,” said Tobias Brunner, Sales Manager at Yunex Traffic.
Yutraffic awareAI 2.0: Smarter, simpler and built for scale
Compared with the previous generation, Yutraffic awareAI 2.0 delivers a new hardware architecture, significantly greater AI processing power and a substantially smaller footprint. Designed for simplified deployment and seamless integration into the Yunex Traffic ecosystem, the platform enables scalable traffic detection across entire urban networks.
Integrated directly into the traffic controller, the solution reduces installation complexity and minimizes the need for additional roadside equipment. A new IP-based architecture enables faster commissioning while lowering deployment costs. With eight times more channels than the previous generation, Yutraffic awareAI 2.0 provides significantly greater capacity for large-scale traffic detection applications.
The system enables secure remote access to live views and local data platforms through a standard web browser. It supports privacy-compliant operation of camera-based traffic detection systems and meets applicable data protection requirements for municipal traffic environments.
As cities increasingly rely on data-driven traffic management, AI-enabled detection is becoming a key foundation for safer, more adaptive and more sustainable mobility. The deployment in Weiden demonstrates how next-generation traffic perception can improve network performance, protect vulnerable road users and support the transition toward connected and automated mobility.
