Join SUM Project's Capacity Building Training in Coimbra

The SUM project, under the ERTICO Academy umbrella, is organising a two-day capacity-building training in Coimbra from 23 to 24 April. Designed for local and regional authorities, transport authorities, and mobility stakeholders to advance seamless, shared urban mobility solutions, this event is open not only to project partners but also to external participants, including local authorities, transport operators, researchers, and practitioners interested in innovative mobility services.

With a limited capacity of 20 participants, the training offers a highly interactive and hands-on learning environment, combining theoretical input, practical exercises, and real-life case exploration.

Training focus and topics addressed
The programme is structured around a set of interlinked themes that reflect current implementation challenges faced by cities:

• Business models for shared mobility services. The training looks at how new mobility services are structured and financed, including revenue models, value creation, and long-term viability. It also addresses common pitfalls observed in deployment and scaling, based on practical cases.
• From concept to service design, participants will work on the co-design of mobility services, exploring how to translate policy goals into concrete service offers, taking into account user needs, operational constraints, and stakeholder roles.
• Mobility hubs as integration nodes. A dedicated block focuses on the planning and design of mobility hubs, including their role in organising multimodal access, improving first/last mile connections, and structuring shared mobility within the urban fabric.
• Communication strategies and user uptake. The sessions address how cities can effectively communicate sustainable mobility options, including the use of digital tools, targeted messaging, and behavioural approaches to increase adoption.
• Citizen engagement and participatory approaches. The programme explores how to design and implement engagement strategies to ensure that new mobility services are aligned with local needs and supported by users.
• Linking strategy to implementation. The final part of the training brings these elements together in an integrated workshop, where participants connect business models, hubs, communication, and engagement into coherent deployment approaches.

Learning through practice: Coimbra Living Lab

The training is grounded in the Coimbra Living Lab, allowing participants to engage directly with local solutions. This includes:

• Exposure to on-demand public transport services
• Exchange with the municipality on micromobility deployment
• A site visit to operational facilities, linking policy, planning, and service delivery
  This combination ensures that discussions remain anchored in real operational conditions and decision-making contexts.
